A Vision for the Future ...
True Vertical Food Production - ZipGrow Towers
Urbaform is pleased to offer an innovation in vertical food production, the Bright AgroTech ZipGrow Towers. This unique system promises to deliver true vertical production of food while minimizing the footprint of the installation and equipment. Promoting the harvest to table model and employing new design IP to create highly economical production facilities.
While doing my reading early this year I happened on this article in Seedstock ... Wyoming Hydroponic Tower Co. Seeks to Facilitate Sustainable Food Production and Make Farming Less Expensive, By Matt Wilhalme / February 6, 2012 7:29 pm. After contact and study, Urbaform is pleased to offer the ZipGrow Systems to our clients.
"The following are excerpts from this article ...Nate Storey and business partner Paul Bennick want to make farming more efficient, sustainable and affordable for the private and commercial greenhouse grower. To do so, the partners founded Bright AgroTech, LLC, a mission driven company that develops modular hydroponic production towers to not only increase production in hydroponic and aquaponic systems, but also facilitate sustainable food production.
“We got into it to make farming less expensive,” Storey says.
The product that Storey, a PhD candidate** in agronomy at the University of Wyoming, along with Bennick, a Wyoming Army National Guardsmen who served two tours in Iraq and grew up on a ranch, developed to reduce costs is called the ZipGrow Tower™. The towers, which range in price from $49.95 for a 3′ hanging tower to $119.95 for a 5′ bracketed tower, are designed to enable hobbyists and conveyor style commercial plant production operations to both take advantage of unused vertical space and reduce post-harvest production costs.
...According to Storey, Bright AgroTech’s vertical design functions to maximize the efficiency of greenhouse heating and cooling systems, thereby reducing energy costs. The matrix media inserts that go into the towers are also recyclable. Customers can return them to Bright AgroTech for a discount toward future purchases. The company then recycles or reuses the matrix media for water treatment or habitat restoration purposes.

Design & Distribution
ZipGrowTM Towers. These hydroponic production towers are highly productive, modular, and functional in a variety of plant production scenarios, from commercial greens production to landscape design. Many of our customers use them for aquaponic plant production- a utility that takes advantage of the massive mechanical and biological filtration capacity of our towers.
Harvest to table is the ultimate driver of our design. We have created a system that will deliver to the Point Of Sale, produce that is still in growing media. This will allow the food to continue to grow while on display and absolutely minimize the refrigeration, transport and spoilage associated with current practices. Designed to be displayed whole and unharvested in the marketplace, our towers and produce will strengthen locally based agriculture and to offer more choices to consumers who want the ultimate experience in freshness, nutrition and flavor.
The key to making money in crop production is the way Bright Agrotech delivers its produce to consumers. The towers containing the plants are placed in special store displays designed by the company, allowing customers to pick the produce live. That model eliminates the expense of harvesting and packaging produce, which accounts for about 50 percent of the cost of those items at the grocery store.
Christine Langley, CEO of the WTBC, a department under the UW Office of Research and Economic Development believes that the sky is the limit for Bright Agrotech. "(Storey) has major competitive advantages over any competition: the innovative intellectual property on his design," she says. "His approach to using vertical space and vertical growing is incredibly innovative and unique. At this point, it's really about sales and marketing. He has all of the foundational pieces, and now he just needs to push them out to market." We believe that this product has the potential to change the economics of indoor food production. Stay tuned for more innovation using this product.
